Course Purpose:
- To provide a thorough understanding of basic foundation training.
- To introduce to a variety of techniques used to train tracking and trailing dogs.
- To teach students to properly analyze problem areas and apply basic training to their individual K9s.
- To assist in the advancement of experienced K9 teams.
- To provide certification for K9 teams who require it.
Schedule of Class Activities
Our 5 day foundation class can accommodate all levels of experience from novice to advanced K9 teams. This class is usually offered 2 to 3 times per year in May and September and occasionally in April. Below is class schedule and a break down of what will be covered. The schedule is very flexible and can accommodate all skills levels.Day 1: Classroom Study and Team Evaluations
Start day at 8:00 AM with 4 hour classroom session focusing on training methods with a short visual tracking presentation. Lunch Break. Afternoon field work, K9 team assessments. Group discussion. End day 5:00 PM.Day 2: Team Evaluations and Field Work
Start day at 8:00 am field work in rural areas. K9 team assessments continue. Focus on trail laying techniques, proper line control. Learn your dogs drives and what training techniques work best for your dog. Learn to apply proper training techniques. Troubleshoot trailing problems. Group discussion. End day 5:00 PM.Day 3: Field Work / Developing Line Control / Reading Your Dog / Apply Training Techniques
Start day at 8:00 AM. Focus on developing proper line control. How to recognize and respond to canine behavioral changes and body language along the trail including how to recognize negative indications and positive responses to the scent trail. Cross and split trail work, Hard surface training and water crossings are available to more advance teams. Troubleshoot trailing problems. Group discussion. End day 5:00 PM.Day 4: Surface Changes / Troubleshooting Problem / Hard Surface Work for Advance Teams
Start day at 8:00 AM learning to read the dog when surface changes are presented. How to recognize temporary scent loss due to surface changes. Hard surface trailing work is available to more advance teams. Learning to deal with distractions. Troubleshooting common hard surface trailing problems. Group discussion. End day 5:00 PM.Day 5: Certifications and Field Work
Start day at 8:00 AM. Level 1 trailing certifications offered. Field work. Training will focus on problem solving and handlers choice. Wrap up discussion. End day 1:00 to 3:00 PM.The five day foundation class is limited to 15 dog teams. Register as early as possible to insure a slot in this class. Classes are usually filled 3 to 6 months in advanced. You should call for availability if registering 3 months prior to the start of classes.
